Information About Malaysia

Whereabouts
Malaysia is divided into Peninsular Malaysia and
the states of Sabah and Sarawak in North-Western Borneo. Both
regions are separated about 700km (400 miles) of the South
China Sea.
The People
Malaysia has a total population of 22.5 million
people, made up of three main groups ie. Malays, Chinese and
Indians. Various indigenous groups live in Sabah and Sarawak
such as Ibans, Land Dayaks, Kelanaus, Muruts and Kadazans.
Language
The country's official language is Bahasa Malaysia,
however English as second language is widely used and spoken.
The Chinese due to their origin from different parts of China
speaks dialects and the most common being Cantonese, Hokkien
and Hakka.
Climate
Malaysia has a hot equatorial climate averaging
from 25c to 35c with high humidity. The average rainfall is
260cm in a year.
Airport
Malaysia's main airport is the Kuala Lumpur International
Airport (KLIA), located 60km outside of KL City Center. KLIA
is one of the most modern airports within Asia Pacific and the
home base for Malaysia's main carrier Malaysia Airlines (MH).
Malaysia Airlines offers a close network of domestic flights
as well as international services within Asia Pacific to
Europe, Africa, North and South America and Middle East. Other
international airports are located in Penang, Johore and
Kuching.
Currency
The legal tender in Malaysia currency is called Ringgit
and it comes in various denominations. The commonly used
denominations are:
Notes: RM100 / RM50 / RM10 / RM5 / RM2 / RM1
Coins: RM1 / RM0.50 / RM0.20 / RM0.10 / RM0.05 / RM0.01

Taxi
Ordinary taxis (red and white in colour) are readily
available and generally air-conditioned. The fare should be as
per meter reading.
Tipping
It is customary to tip only when eating in restaurants and
nightclubs. No tipping is required when eating at stalls.
Generally, additional tips are not expected in restaurants and
bars and would only be given if the service is superlative.

Shopping
There are numerous places for shopping. Major shopping malls
are in Kuala Lumpur includes the largest shopping complex
in the Asia Pacific Region, Suria KLCC located between
the Twin Towers, Sunway Pyramid Center, Sungei Wang
Plaza, Lot 10, One Utama, Mid Valley Mega Mall and Star Hill Mall
and Bintang Walk.
